What's your budget - how much do you want to spend on the bottle? I'm no connoisseur, but I know a bit about wine. :)

So you're thinking around $20? Or higher? "Midrange" can be anywhere from $15 to $50; for me personally it's around the $20 range.

Another question: Do you want a domestic wine (usually from California, although there are other areas in the States that make wine) or imported (French, Italian, Spanish, Australian...) There's reasonably priced wine from any country, really; it's a matter of preference.

It really doesn`t matter, I just want to buy a really good tasting bottle of wine. Wow, buying wine is a lot harder then deciding if you want lime Diet coke ot diet coke with splenda!!!!!!!!!!!!!LOL!

A very good choice in domestic wine is Beringer (http://www.beringer.com/beringer/home.jsp) – I like their Cabernet best but the Merlot is popular as well.

Jacob's Creek (http://www.jacobscreek.com/) is one of the more well-known names in Australian wine.

I've a personal affinity for Spanish wine; El Coto (http://www.elcoto.com/) is my fave. The Coto de Imaz Reserva is excellent, and here in NYC goes for about $21 or thereabouts.

Hope this helps.

My favourite is a Chilean Shiraz called Casillero del Diablo, by Concha Y Toro. It's gorgeous and a bit pricey but I always buy some when it's on special offer.

Me, I like all kinds of wine. I mean, the color doesn't matter. But for a present I would suggest a sweet wine. Because you don't know the preference of the receiver, you can never go wrong with a sweet white dessert wine like a Muscat or something. Because, honestly, who doesn't like them :)

This week, I drank a good bottle of sweet wine. It was a Montbazillac. Not expensive at all and easy to find in the shops! Had a great taste of honey and nuts. Mmmm...

If you don't want to go for sweet dessert wine, I recommend red wine. But not too heavy. My personal preference is Pinot Noir.

Hope this helps. I may be young, but my family has drunk wine for as long as I can remember.

Sophie you were a great help! Youth has nothing to do with good taste, I feel you`re just born with it. You must have good genes!
