NS The Long Black Coat. NO PAIRINGS/NO SEX

I wrote this story because Dawn challenged someone to write a story where we get one or both of the guys into a long coat. I also was challenging myself to write a story without sex. That is hard because my muses are horny little devils and I really think that Starsky was so turned on by Hutch's white knightliness in this story, that he probably had him up against the door as soon as he got him home.

If you see any grammar errors let me know. I didn't want to send it to Dawn for a third time. I think I got it all fixed though!

I've been in the hospital for a week ever since those two hoodlums beat me up. I’m excited because the doctor says I can be released any day now.

I owe my life to that blond cop Hutch, who stopped them from beating me to death. They wanted my bottle of Boone's Farm. I bought the bottle myself with the money that rich guy gave me after I washed his car windows while he was stopped at the red light. I wasn’t about to let two nasty kids have it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was sitting in my house which is made out of a big box. I found the box behind the piano store the other day, and I have a prime location for it behind the dumpster of the Mini Mart. Anyway, I was drinking and minding my own business, when that smart mouth kid with the baseball bat and his snot-nosed friend said, "Hey, Travis, give me that bottle or I'll use your head for baseball practice."
No way! It was a cold night and my coat alone wasn't enough to keep my old bones warm. "You can take that bat and shove it up your..."
Before I knew it, he started whacking me. I tried to protect myself, but it’s hard when one hand is holding on to a bottle. The kids must have broken the wine bottle because I could smell the wine, and feel wetness all over my coat. I told the good Lord that I would see him soon. I knew I was a goner, and then I heard the voice of an angel.
“Hey mister, can you hear me?”
I groaned, “Yeah, I hear ya.”
I opened my eyes as wide as I could with all the blood running down my face, and sure enough, there was an angel. He had pulled those hoodlums off of me.
“My name's Hutch, can you tell me your name?” the angel of mercy asked.
“Travis…oh, it hurts so bad,” I moaned.
“I know, buddy, just hang in there, I’m going to get you some help as soon as I can.”
Hutch took out his own hankie and wiped the blood from my face and then pressed it over the big cut in my head.
“Travis, I need you to hold this on your head. Can you do that for me?”
“I’ll try,” I said, “But I don’t know how long I can hold it, I hurt so bad.”
The golden angel took off his jacket and started to cover me with it.
"Don't!" I protested. "You'll get your coat all dirty." I smelled like wine, stink and blood.
"It's fine, just relax." He tugged the coat up around my neck.
I groaned, “My head hurts so bad."
The angel patted me. “Travis, listen I have to go and call for help. Don’t worry I’ll be back before you know it.
I started to think I was having one of those great dreams that I have after a good night of drinking hard liquor, but the angel reappeared, and I knew he was real.
When I woke up in the hospital, the nurses told me that my angel's name was Detective Hutchinson. He had called an ambulance and had been checking all evening to make sure I was going to be all right.
Hutch told me he was lucky to find me. He had run to the store to pick up some beer and heard me yelling. His partner Starsky had been down the street at his place waiting on him and started worrying what was taking Hutch so long. Starsky had come along just in time to help arrest the two hoodlums.
Starsky told me that his White Knight had struck again. I told him he was no knight he was an angel. After I’d been in the hospital a week, and doing pretty good, Hutch called me on the phone.
“Travis, Starsky and I’ll be by this afternoon to check you out of the hospital."
"Sure, that sounds great," I said. I was getting tired of being in bed all the time, but the food at the hospital was pretty good, three meals a day’s, more than I usually have.
"I hope you don’t mind that I found you a nice place to stay over at the Salvation Army," Hutch said. "I heard they have good food and clean sheets, how does that sound?”
“Well, as long as they don’t expect me to ring the bell at Christmas time, it sounds a mite better than my box,” I said chucking at my own joke.
.
I didn't know coppers could be so nice. He's made me regain some faith in the law.
“Travis, Starsky and I could try and find you some work if you need us to?” Hutch asked.
“That is mighty nice of you two, but my job is doing pretty good right now. If things change, I might be givin' you fellers a holler.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I was going a little stir crazy. I’d been in this hospital room longer than I’d stayed anywhere, and I was itching to get out. Just then, I looked up as those two detectives walked in my room.

"Hey, Travis, you ready to blow this joint?" It was Hutch. He has the nicest voice.

"I don't know, Hutch, this place has the prettiest nurses, and they give a great sponge bath," I said.

"Travis, you’re a dirty ol' man!" Hutch's nice partner Starsky said.

"Who are you callin' old, copper?" I said, teasing him. He likes to tease, that Starsky does.

They helped me into the wheelchair. "I'll drive." Starsky grabbed the handlebars.

"I wouldn't let him, Travis, he drives like a wild man," Hutch said, picking up the bag of my stuff.

"At least I have a car that runs," Starsky said, pushing me out the door of the hospital room.

"Wait!" I said. I didn't have my coat. "Hutch, where's my long, black coat?"

"Don't worry, Travis, it's in this bag here."

"Can you get it for me, Hutch?"

"Sure, do you want me to take it and have it cleaned?" Hutch asked. Hutch took it out of the bag and handed the coat to me.

"No, Hutch, I want you to have it."

"Travis, it's your only coat, you'll get cold. I have several." Hutch pushed it gently into my lap. "You keep it."

I was so sad because this nice man had ruined his own coat and risked his own life to help me. I wanted to give him something. The problem was I didn't have nuthin’ to give him, except my coat.

"Hutch, I insist you take this coat." I held up it up to him. "It's kept me warm on many a cold night. It's got great, deep pockets to carry lots of things. I need you to have it. I insist you take it."

Hutch didn't want to I could see it in his eyes. He glanced over at Starsky with a frown. He was so worried that I would need it more than him. But I could tell he knew I meant what I said, so he gave in.

"Ok, Travis, I'd be proud to own such a special coat," Hutch said. "But you have to take my letter jacket. I would worry if you didn't have something to wear to keep you warm."

So right then and there, we traded coats. I had almost forgotten Starsky was standing with us, he'd been so quiet.

"Bea-uti-ful!" he said. "Hutch, why don't you put your coat on? It's cool outside."

"Well, I'm kind of warm, so I'll just carry it," Hutch said.

I wanted to see how good he'd look in my long black coat. "Please, Angel Hutch, put it on. I wanna see ya."

“Yes, angel Hutch, put it on," Starsky said chuckling.
“If you guys will stop with the angel stuff, I’ll do it.”

He slid his arms into the coat and pulled it on. He did look mighty fine. He's a good looking kid, reminded me of myself when I was young. I could tell he loved that old coat by the look on his face.

Before we got to the door, the doctor came in. "Mr. Travis, I want to talk to you before these fine gentlemen take you to the shelter."

"Well—" I started.

"We'll be right outside, waiting for you, Travis," Hutch said. The guys went out into the hall to give us some privacy.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Hutch, you look great in that coat!" Starsky said. He stood quite a distance away from Hutch, starting to chuckle.
"Starsky, when I get you alone, I'm going to make you pay for suggesting I wear this coat." Hutch plucked at the collar with a grimace. "Do you know what it smells like?"
"Why do you think I'm standing down wind from you?"
The doctor came out of the hospital room, pushing Travis.
Hutch went over and put his arm around Starsky's shoulder and pulled him close. "Yes, Travis…" Hutch made sure Starsky got a good smell of what he was getting after they dropped Travis off. "Starsky is going to give you a ride to the car. Right, buddy?"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It’s been several weeks since the incident. I see Starsky and Hutch every now and then. They always stop and check on me. Hutch slips me a couple of bucks. It’s starting to get colder at night and sometimes I miss my old coat with the deep pockets, but I’ve found that if I stuff the jacket Hutch gave me with newspapers), I stay pretty warm.

I woke up this morning and found the nicest surprise. It was a new long coat. This one was tan, but it had nice deep pockets and was made of wool. There was a note in the pocket.

Dear Travis. I love the coat you gave me and it’s so warm. I just had to make sure you had one, too, so I don’t worry about you freezing while washing windows this winter. I got you a lighter color so you’ll be more visual at night. Enjoy!
Hutch and Starsky

Yep he’s an angel alright!
